Jess Lukjanow on Getting to Know Your Audience

Published on

Lukjanow’s 20 minute speech, titled “Where the Bloody Hell do Ideas Come From" covers the importance of knowing your audience.

When working on a podcast titled ‘The Pineapple Project’, Lukjanow said the initial and most important focus was on who their audience was going to be. Who would be consuming the content? What are their interests, what do they want to hear about? How would they like it presented? She did so through data collection, however acknowledges that this sounds “crazy” to students who are likely operating at a smaller level.

“What’s the point of sending out a message if you don’t have a person receiving it?”

“What’s the point of not angling the message as appropriately to those people as possible?”

The pineapple project managed to identify their audience and target them really well, thus securing them a spot on the top of the iTunes podcasting charts for a long period of time. It has also been renewed for a second and third season.

So, how did they get so spot on with their audience?

Jess said that their approach was as simple as post-it-notes with a profile of a possible audience member on each.

You must know your audience, know what their habits are, and come up with that singular point, or gap, that will spark their interest.

    Other points Lukjanow suggests are

    • - Look for ideas on places other than the traditional mediums
    • - Do mental gymnastics – don’t alwaysdo the obvious
    • - Don’t be an observer of your surrounding communities – be a part of them

“All it is, is engaging with your audiences in the best possible way.”
